Global health is a field of study, practice and research that focuses on achieving health equity worldwide. This subject explores transnational health issues, determinants and proposed solutions in the lens of nursing profession. Whereas in the past, the health care sector discussed international health, the current emphasis is on global health - signifying a switch of focus beyond national boundaries.

The goal of this subject is to enable Japanese nursing students to learn about global health issues, with the aim of helping to improve professional practice and the health of people through better understanding of the international community. The pros and cons of globalization on health and the healthcare sector and its implications for Japanese nursing will be discussed. Strategies through which Japanese nurses can become engaged in promoting global health will be explored.

This Subject has 8 classes and a total of 15 hours.
Teaching and Learning Activities: Global Health Nursing will be taught in English.
Classes will take the form of seminars, with students expected to contribute and share their ideas and findings from assignment work in groups and class discussions. The classes are prepared as flipped class: the students must read the materials before the class to be able to participate in the discussions.

The responsibilities of students: 1. Students are expected to undertake readings/work on the class topic before each class (see schedule). 2. Students are expected to attend all classes: Absences of three (3) or more classes will result in an automatic Fail Grade (D); Absences for any class requires emergency or medical doctor certificate of sickness. 3. All work should be clearly referenced. Copying work from the internet or other sources without acknowledgment may also result in a failing grade.
ABOUT CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT You have three assignments for this course. If you fail either of your assignments, the decision to do remedial work in order to pass rests with the professor teaching the subject. You must pass all the assignments to pass this Subject. Assignment 1 (Individual Work): (20%) Choose a specific topic on gender and global health 1. Describe the problem. 2. Explain different approaches to the problem. 3. Present some leading solutions/innovations that have been or should be developed to solve this problem.
Assignment 2 (Group Work): (60%) Work in pairs or groups in class. Choose one of the following global health issues to research in detail. Thye students can decide other topic of interest if it is relevant for this subject GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUES 1. Long COVID 2. Mental health 2.1 Impacts of Conflict on Mental Health 2.2 Mental health and psychosocial support 2.3 Mental Health and Disasters 3. Impact of climate change 4. Non-Communicable diseases 4.1 Cardiovascular disease 4.2 Diabetes 5. Lower Respiratory Infections 6. Poverty’s role in health 7. Health systems strengthening 8. Road injuries 9. Dementia 10. Population aging 11. A Global Shortage of Health Care Workers 12. A Migrant Health Emergency 13. A Global Maternal and Neonatal Health Emergency 14. Outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases (epidemics and pandemics) 15. Inadequate access to health systems
The students must provide an overview of the problem globally and in different geographical areas. They should identify the main challenges and suggest innovative actions that can be taken to address this global issue. The students will work together in class and give a presentation on the topic. They will also write a report and submit in Class 7. This is a group paper. Please ensure that all group members are included.
Assessment 3: Class participation and minor homework (20%) You will be given some readings to prepare for class. Some classes will have a discussion and the students will provide some answers to a list of questions provided. Students are expected to actively participate in class in order to gain high marks.
IN ALL ASSIGNMENTS, ALL JOURNAL ARTICLES OR OTHER LITERATURE HAS TO BE PROPERLY REFERENCED. Please refer to the format used in APA 7. This will be briefly explained in class. Also, numerous online guides are available from credible websites.

There are no recommended textbooks for this subject. You can buy them if you are interested to keep a copy for your own reference. However, these are not expected to be 'textbooks' by the subject teacher. Instead of studying a textbook, students are expected to search for information on relevant websites and read the latest journal articles to develop their own knowledge base on the subject. Students will use their own laptops or tablets to search for information in class.
