授業の目的と概要
The goal of this subject is to provide students with knowledge and skills to raise awareness in the area of cultural sensitivity and health care needs of people from different cultures. Students are encouraged to examine their own cultural dimensions of health and illness, and compare these to other cultures to increase their sensitivity, understanding, and skills in practice. This will enable doctoral students to become leaders in assisting with cross-cultural health care both within Japan and internationally. This subject examines contemporary theories and concepts that contribute to increased knowledge and skills in caring for people from different ethnic backgrounds, and who hold different cultural beliefs, values, and expectations about health and illness. This includes an examination of cultural competence theory and cultural safety.

メッセージ
This subject calls for a deep personal reflection on personal values, beliefs and attitudes. It calls into question many facets of how we live our lives and how we relate to others who may be similar to or different from us. The basis for quality cross-cultural care comes first from personal sensitivity and awareness. Such is one of the aims that this subject hopes to achieve. Moreover, as a teacher, I hope that we will go through this learning path together - becoming better informed about ourselves, and others who are related to us in the course of our professional practice. I hope that through undertaking this subject, we will begin to master some needed competencies for quality cross-cultural care and research.

The responsibilities of students:

1. Every student is expected to prepare for class before they attend the class sessions.
2. Students are expected to attend all classes: Absences of more than two classes will result in an automatic Fail grade (D); Absence of any class requires justifications, such as emergency or medical reasoning. Prior approval needs to be obtained as much as possible.
3. Students should never copy of someone else's work as this will result in a failure grade. Plagiarism is taken very seriously in academia. Direct quotes or ideas from other authors must always be referenced.

When submitting your assignment via digital means, please note the following:

1. Clearly state your name, student number, and the course title in the cover page (1st page of your assignment).
2. Please back-up your assignment while working on it and keep an e-copy in case an assignment is lost in cyberspace.
3. Please observe the citation format according to the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) when formatting your assignment before submission.
4. If students did not receive an acknowledgement of the receipt of the submitted assignment, please email the teacher again to make sure that your submission has reached the teacher.
5. Plagiarism is a serious offense in academia. Please write the assignment in your own words and duly acknowledge your source. As in all higher institutions, there will be penalty for plagiarism. Either marks will be deducted, or a failure grade will be accorded pending on the seriousness of the offense.
