The Basic Act on Intellectual Property defines intellectual property as "inventions, devices, new varieties of plants, designs, works of authorship and other things produced by human creative activity, trademarks, trade names and other things indicating goods or services used in business activities, and trade secrets and other technical or business information useful in business activities.Unlike tangible property such as land or a desk or chair, intellectual property exists as an intangible object (information such as ideas) that can be used elsewhere at the same time and over which direct control is difficult. Therefore, control by the right holder is required in each phase of acquiring, protecting, and utilizing rights, in accordance with the characteristics of the intangible object. The recipient of intellectual property is also required to make appropriate judgments as to where the intellectual property exists and to what extent it can be used. This course is designed to provide participants with an overall overview of intellectual property, as well as the knowledge of intellectual property necessary for writing reports and papers, and to develop an understanding of concepts and rudimentary intellectual property skills through familiar case studies.
