In the 2024 edition of the Gender Gap Report published annually by the World Economic Forum, Japan is ranked 118th out of 146 countries in the world. How should we make sense of this situation? Furthermore, in developing countries, women, children, the elderly, and the handicapped cannot be properly evaluated by society, make use of their abilities, and actively participate in development. situation can also be seen. Through this lecture, let's think together about how to understand these various issues related to development and gender, and how we should be involved. In the lecture, we will invite international students from developing countries and ask them to give presentations on their respective situations. This lecture will be given by a faculty member with practical experience at JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). Lectures are held face-to-face whenever possible.

Students will be able to understand the basic theories of development and gender, the comparison of the current status of development and gender between countries and Japan, and the basics of issues faced by international organizations and countries. Students will be able to gain an accurate understanding of development and gender-related events in various countries around the world, and will be able to judge what the issues are today. Students will be able to actively think about what they can do to address development and gender issues, either as a university student or after entering society. Able to actively participate in lectures and discussions and summarize and present one's own opinions. Able to lead discussions in group debates, etc. Able to lead discussions in group work, etc. Learn group debate skills and how to express your opinions effectively. Be able to talk comfortably with international students, understand the good points of Japan and foreign countries in a multicultural environment, and be able to act accordingly.

The entire class is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 will teach the basic framework for understanding development and gender, and Part 2 will deepen understanding of issues in the international community and conduct group debates. The third part focuses on presentations. Part 1 explains the significance of studying development and gender, and the relationship between the events around us and gender. In addition, we will explain the basics of the relationship with international cooperation in an easy-to-understand manner. In Part 2, we will discuss development and gender issues in each country, including Japan, through concrete examples, followed by a group debate. In Part 3, international students currently studying at Yamaguchi University will be invited to introduce their own countries and give presentations on the gender situation, deepening understanding of development and gender issues in each country. Students must write a final report in English and submit it by the specified date.
Lectures are held face-to-face whenever possible. However, depending on the situation, the form of classes, examinations, etc. may change.
