This course is for students majoring chemistry, who have already studied the courses of Organic Chemistry I, II and III. The course covers Chapters 16-24 of the textbook dealing with the chemistry of carbonyl functionality, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and reactions controlled by orbital symmetry. By completing a series of organic chemistry classes including this class, students can obtain comprehensive knowledge of basic organic chemistry at the university level.

The course covers the chemistry of carbonyl functionality, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and reactions controlled by orbital symmetry. The lecture will be provided with a projector. Quiz will be given at the beginning of the every lectures to encourage your study at home. In principle, the quiz will be came from the content of the out-of-class study instruction on the relevant lecture day. Attendance will be checked by submission of the quiz answer sheet.
As far as the number of students is within the capacity of the lecture room specified by the guidelines of Yamaguchi University, face-to-face classes will be held. Online classes may be held depending on the situation. The change will be announced by Shugaku-shien system (e-mail). If Yamaguchi University requests an online class on the day of the review exercise, the exercise will be considered as an exam and will be held in a face-to-face class.

Studying before and reviewing after lectures are effective for deep understanding of the textbook. The students are highly recommended to read the textbook in advance of each lecture. Please work on the problems in the text by your own to organize knowledge as well as to get a sense of organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is tend to require you to of build-up knowledge. Students, who feel this lecture is too hard, are recommended to re-study the relevant parts of Organic Chemistry I~III before attending the lecture. In addition, a quiz will be given at the beginning of the every lectures to encourage your study at home. I would like to introduce the common contents in modern organic chemistry as much as possible, although none of them are shown in the basic organic chemistry textbook (Jones Organic Chemistry). For those information, please refer to the books in the reference section.
Students, who do not aim to obtain credits, are also welcome to attend the class.
