This course teaches mechanical drafting techniques through lectures and practical exercises. Students will learn the essential rules for creating technical drawings that comply with international standards. Key topics include how to specify tolerances and surface characteristics on drawings to meet design functions and requirements. Through hands-on practice, students will gain a solid understanding of mechanical drafting fundamentals by creating technical drawings of various mechanical components, such as bolts, nuts, and gears. By the end of the course, students will challenge themselves with the drafting of a complex mechanical device: a gear pump.

Develop a proper understanding of the rules of mechanical drawing based on international standards (JIS) and acquire the ability to accurately represent design intentions, such as tolerances and surface characteristics, in technical drawings. Students will also learn to interpret and communicate the information conveyed in drawings correctly. Gain the skills to calculate, analyze, identify errors, correct, and represent critical design information, such as planar features, geometric tolerances, and gear modules, following drafting principles. Furthermore, students will learn to decompose three-dimensional shapes into two-dimensional drawings with manufacturing considerations and assess for completeness and accuracy. Cultivate an interest in everyday mechanical devices, such as automobiles, bicycles, and vacuum cleaners, and deepen their enthusiasm and motivation for mechanical engineering by understanding how specialized knowledge in the field translates into tangible products through drafting. Understand the potential impacts and outcomes of insufficient, unclear, or misleading technical drawings, and develop a mindset to create clear, accurate, and easily understandable drawings that convey correct information effectively.

|
|
The course begins with lecture sessions to understand the principles of mechanical drafting in compliance with international standards (JIS). This is followed by practical exercises where students apply the learned drafting methods through hands-on drawing practice.
Mechanical drafting involves numerous rules, such as the process of converting three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional representations, methods for expressing design functions, and techniques for specifying tolerances and surface characteristics. While mastering these concepts requires time and effort, students can progress step by step.
To ensure success, active participation in both lectures and exercises is essential. Make sure to attend regularly and engage fully in the practical sessions to avoid falling behind.
