授業の目的と概要
The outline for each semester is as follows:

SPRING

The principal focus for the first semester is to foster an aptitude for authentic technical communication in English. There will be an emphasis on developing key skills in the following areas: group work, oral presentation skills with a focus on data description, language for written and verbal communication contexts such as emails and phone conversations, describing and explaining scientific concepts, and interpersonal development such as group work, self-assessment, and peer review. Throughout the course, students will complete 12 modules covering a variety of engineering fields to strengthen their understanding and productive abilities regarding technical topics. Students can expect to spend roughly 1~2 hours per week on assignments/review outside of class.

FALL

The principal focus of the fall semester is to foster an aptitude for using technical English communication to learn about and discuss modern issues in engineering. There will be an emphasis on developing key skills in the following areas: group work, oral presentation skills with a focus on project analysis, language used in real-world contexts such as fieldwork and online meetings, describing and explaining scientific concepts, and interpersonal development such as peer review. Throughout the course, students will complete 12 modules covering a variety of engineering fields to strengthen their productive abilities and understanding of the topics. Students can expect to spend roughly 2 hours per week on assignments/review outside of class.
授業の到達目標
This course introduces students to technical communication and covers a wide variety of core language skills necessary to work with scientific concepts in English. It covers basic academic writing and spoken communication appropriate for students of science and technology who will use English to interact with (or within) an international workplace or academic discipline. Students are required to complete preparatory online assignments before each module, including an oral presentation on the tenth week of class for each semester. Cooperative learning will be established through the use of group/peer work as well as peer feedback for presentations. Each semester is divided into three units, and student comprehension will be assessed with a quiz following each unit that covers vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatic skills introduced in the unit. In addition, a written final exam will be administered at the end of each semester.
授業計画
【全体】
The spring semester consists of three units, covering different aspects of technical communication. The first unit focuses on basic communication phrases related to conversational interaction. The second unit covers technical aspects of scientific English and presentations, and the final unit deals with advanced explanations related to object description and scientific processes.

The fall semester consists of three units, covering different aspects of technical communication. The first unit focuses on basic communication phrases related to idea exchange and discussion. The second unit covers technical aspects of project planning and presentations, and the final unit deals with critical analysis and self expression.

At the culmination of each unit, there will be a unit quiz to test overall comprehension of the unit material. In addition, students will be required to give a short technical presentation on a topic of their choice each semester.
