授業の目的と概要
This course systematically covers plant breeding from its historical origins to the latest molecular breeding techniques, following the textbook. After understanding plant classification, reproduction patterns, and the fundamentals of genetics, students will learn breeding methods tailored to plant characteristics such as self-fertility, cross-fertility, and vegetative propagation. They will also study techniques utilizing polyploidy and mutations, and explore the cutting edge of molecular breeding, including genome editing. Furthermore, the course will deepen consideration of global challenges such as food security and the sustainable use of genetic resources.
授業の到達目標
• Understand the history of plant breeding and the development of breeding science alongside historical shifts, along with its contributions to humanity.
• Be able to explain appropriate breeding theories based on plant reproductive and propagation patterns.
• Master the principles and practical examples of F1 breeding, mutation breeding, tissue culture, and molecular breeding (DNA markers, genome editing, etc.).
• Articulate personal perspectives on the international landscape surrounding genetic resources and the role of plant breeding in the future global environment.

Each session will be based on the corresponding chapter in the textbook Essential Plant Breeding.

第7回 Breeding of self-fertilizing plant Characteristics, origins, and specific breeding methods (such as pedigree selection) of self-fertilizing plants The students have to conduct 2 hours of preparatory study 2 hours of review according to the lesson plan.
第8回 Breeding of vegetatively propagated plants Genetic characteristics, Cross breeding, Selection of mutants The students have to conduct 2 hours of preparatory study 2 hours of review according to the lesson plan. Session 8 will be offered on-demand, with the midterm exam conducted in person. The midterm exam will cover material from Sessions 1 through 7.
