At a fundamental level, Visual Communication Design can be understood as the discipline which produces, manipulates, and makes use of of visually rich content for the process of information exchange. New generations of professionals are understanding that real social changes with everlasting consequences can be produced through the use of visually rich content, however, one require the comprehension of the visual phenomena(and its symbolism) at a deeper level that encompasses the understating of 'human Language' and its psychological, cultural and even political aspects. This course present an historical overview of the evolution of the visual communication design field and its fundamental from a semantic perspective. In addition, students (probably) have their first approach to the world of visual production at a technical level, that is to say, the techniques and methods to create visually rich tools of communications.

1) Understand and master basic concepts of visual communication design (language, communication, design and society)
2) Understand visual communication design from a scientific perspective. 3) Understand the semantic properties of images and symbols, and learn how to use them for communication 4) Understand the relationship between society and culture through design activities.
At the beginning, the four concepts of language, communication, design and society will be explained in a traditional lecture type mode, their fundamental definitions, properties, and how they interact(and influence) each other. Little by little the dynamic will be changed in order to prompt a more conversational and discursive approach. Group discussions will be encouraged, students will be evaluated according to their participation and pro-activity. In addition, evaluation will be based mainly on IN CLASS ASSIGNMENTS which if not completed on the given time, they will have to be submitted next class as homework.

'Total' Design Workshop Practical Exercise I
From this point until the end of the course, the students are immersed in a "design workshop dynamic". The contemporary topic is given to the students with the objective of designing a(some) piece(s) of visual communication design. In each class the progress is jointly reviewed, discussed, and evaluated (by all members of the course). By the end of this practical period students are require to prepare a public exhibition of the designed pieces.
