The main objective of the Science and Technology Seminar 1 series is to approach various problems faced in modern society through multi-disciplinary aspects of science and technology. This course teaches the basics of Earth system science, focusing on the interactions between Earth's environment and human activities (the Anthroposphere). The class will be covering problems and examples of this interaction: 1) Earth’s global warming, 2) natural resource and energy shifts, and 3) natural hazards.

Various challenges are arising in local communities, the international communities, and at different scales and regions. Actively engaging with these social issues requires a broad range of knowledge, including science, technology, culture, and society, as well as the ability to comprehensively utilize this knowledge, gather information, organize problems, and further set appropriate goals and challenges and take practical actions to solve them. This course aims to cultivate a practical foundation for actively engaging in problem-solving by acquiring fundamental knowledge and skills related to science and technology, fostering active questioning and thinking about issues involving science, technology, and society, and promoting proactive involvement in addressing these problems.

This class teaches the fundamentals of Earth Science, Earth System Science and Earth Environmental Science. We first explore the unique characteristics of Planet Earth in the Atmosphere, Ocean and Solid Earth. We then learn about the characteristics of the Anthroposphere and the impact of human activities on Earth’s environment. The class will be covering problems and examples of this interaction: 1) Earth’s global warming, 2) natural resource and energy shifts, and 3) natural hazards. The class consists of lectures, fieldwork, reports and assignments. Class schedule may change according to class size and progress.
