Environmental problems frequently arise from economic motivations. Environmental economics not only analyses the structure of these problems but also discusses responsibilities and cost allocation. This course examines the incentive structures of various economic agents and debates how responsibilities and cost allocation should be assigned to achieve a desirable structure. Beyond knowledge and understanding of natural and social phenomena, it cultivates social insight by clarifying specific problem areas. Group discussions also foster the ability to refine and realise ideas.

Diverse challenges arise within local communities, the international community, and across various scales and regions. To engage proactively with these societal challenges, one requires broad knowledge spanning science, technology, culture, and society, the ability to integrate and apply this knowledge comprehensively, and the practical skills to collaborate with people from diverse cultural and ideological backgrounds, leading to the appropriate formulation and resolution of issues. This course aims to cultivate the fundamental knowledge and frameworks concerning the relevant ideologies, cultures, politics, and economics necessary for this purpose. It also seeks to foster spontaneous questioning and critical thinking regarding the various problems involving people and society, thereby developing a practical foundation for active engagement in problem-solving.

The course will proceed through the following sequence: understanding the actual situation, analysing the problem structure, discussion, and academic explanation. After examining the actual situation using newspaper articles, data, etc., we will consider the problem structure and analyse the incentive structure that causes it. We will then discuss how to overcome this. Following this, we will learn academic and theoretical perspectives. The course will be conducted primarily through group discussions and student presentations (providing topics), though this may be adjusted depending on the number of students. The course will be conducted in Japanese.
