As the economy globalizes and society grows increasingly complex and diverse, we find ourselves in a situation where we cannot ignore economic trends not only domestically but also internationally in our daily lives. Understanding how the economy functions within society and how to interpret it is a crucial perspective within the Faculty of Global Sciences Studies. This is significant not only for cultivating knowledge and understanding of politics and economics (DP1-3) but also for developing social insight (DP4-2). This course uses the fundamental economic theories learned in foundational subjects to develop the ability to view society from an economic perspective. It also encourages students to collectively consider what responses might be possible to make society more desirable. Within the faculty's curriculum, this course is positioned as an advanced subject. This class is conducted in Japanese.

Diverse challenges arise within local communities, the international community, and across various scales and regions. To actively engage with these societal challenges, one requires broad knowledge spanning science, technology, culture, and society, the ability to integrate and apply this knowledge comprehensively, and the practical skills to collaborate with people from diverse cultural and ideological backgrounds to appropriately define and resolve issues. This course aims to cultivate the fundamental knowledge and frameworks related to the ideas, cultures, politics, and economics necessary for this purpose. It also seeks to foster spontaneous questioning and critical thinking about the various problems involving people and society, thereby developing a practical foundation for active engagement in problem-solving.

The course centers on group discussions. Students research each topic beforehand and present their findings to their group and the entire class. They engage in discussions on assigned issues, analyze problem structures, and propose solutions. Instructors introduce theoretical economic concepts to deepen students' understanding of economic theory and social issues.
