This course relates to DP-1, acquiring a wide knowledge and the skill to use the knowledge, and DP-2, which is communication ability.
This course is categorized as a cultural and social seminar, whose important aim is to gain collaboration skill. However, “Comparative Literature and Culture” is a study area, which is based on using several languages and has a profound connection to understanding others. Therefore, this course is strongly associated with acquiring the ability of understanding diversity in culture and the ability of introspection under the category of DP-2.
This course is a fundamental INTRODUCTION to comparative literature and comparative culture.
It is not a course in the more advanced methodology of comparative literature and comparative culture, nor is it simply a literature course.
The “Comparative” in the title Comparative Literature and Culture has nothing to do with saying that one is better than the other. Also, Comparative Literature and Culture is definitely not simply reading and thinking about overseas literature by Japanese, nor Japanese literature by someone whose mother tongue is not Japanese, or finding the “right” answer or interpretation. The students will need to share their own thoughts and ideas about their own understanding about both the meaning and sub-text of the chosen literature.
We will be reading and interpreting several texts from diverse cultures and regions (including Japanese culture and literature) so that students come to nurture their interests in understanding the multi-culture world and their ability of intro-and-extro-spections.
We will have some special online (Webex) Lectures and discussions with AMU in Poland.
Webex's access information for the special lectures will be shared via the shugaku shien system and moodle.

Important Alert about Report Theft and Plagiarism (Dean, Faculty of Global and Science Studies Loehr Marc)
Report theft and plagiarism is a form of cheating on exams. It is considered report theft when you copy what another person wrote, such as from a report, book, or internet page, and you submit the work with your name on it as if you wrote it yourself. Plagiarism is when you write what others have written (in books, internet pages, theses etc.) and do not cite the source. If you didn’t create the information yourself, you must write where the information you are using came from, or it is a form of cheating. For international exchange students: If discovered, the case may be reported to the university from which the international student came from, and may also invalidate the units earned in other subjects during the term. Everyone knows that you must not cheat on tests and reports in any way, but keep in mind that plagiarism and report theft are serious forms of cheating. Source citations that follow legitimate procedures are not report theft or plagiarism. If you do not clearly understand how to properly quote or use others’ work, please ask your student advisor or teacher.
