授業の目的と概要
This course will analyze mass media and their markets in an international framework. After explaining the historical development of the mass media the analysis will focus on present characteristics of the most important mass media and their markets. Furthermore, comparing the traditional mass media with mass media elements of the Internet, their problems and potential will be discussed. The main objective of the course is to raise the students' level of media literacy by identifying the "interests" the mass media reveal.
授業の到達目標
Diverse issues are occurring in local and international communities, on various scales and in various regions. In order to be actively involved in tackling these social issues, it is necessary to have a wide range of knowledge in science, technology, culture, society, etc., to utilize them comprehensively, to cooperate with people from diverse cultural and ideological backgrounds, and to have the practical ability to set appropriate issues and solve them. This course aims to teach the basic knowledge and methods related to thought, culture, politics and economics, as well as to foster spontaneous questions and thinking about issues that involve people and society, and to cultivate a practical foundation for actively participating in solving these issues.

【全体】
First, the social needs leading to the emergence of a particular mass medium will be identified from a historical point of view. In the following step the present characteristics of the most important mass media and their markets will be analyzed. The course will conclude with a comparison of the traditional mass media and mass media elements of the Internet and a discussion of their problems and potential.
