Students learn about the diversity of tourism. The industrial revolution and mass transport systems have significantly changed our society. In addition, development of air transportation has made travel easier and, as a result, tourism has become one of the largest industries in the world. International tourism is not an urban issue alone anymore. In some rural areas, international tourists have strong impacts towards local people economically and culturally. When mass-tourism was dominant, many of tourists concentrated in artificial rural areas such as beach resorts and ski resorts. On the other hand, eco-tourists and green-tourists at times deeply interact with local people.

There are two aims of this class: 1) learn basic concepts from the textbook and 2) individual research by students. Students can learn international tourism policy especially as it relates to Japan. A summary understanding of the textbook is the main task for your midterm. Additionally, it is important to understand that international tourism policies are complex. Not only Japan’s international tourism policies, but also an understanding of tourism developments other than Japan is also needed. The final report requires a comparative study between Japan and other countries with the use of several reference materials.
