In a sustainable and healthy water cycle society, there needs to be an appropriate balance between the water metabolism of human society, where people obtain safe water and discharge unwanted water, and the preservation of a rich environment. If the various pollutants and pathogens contained in wastewater generated by human activities such as living, agriculture and industry are not removed by sewage treatment and released into the environment, they will move and diffuse within the water cycle, threatening the ecosystem. Furthermore, the portion of pollutants that have migrated into groundwater or downstream areas and exceed the treatment capacity of water treatment plants may damage people's health via tap water. Given the above background, maintaining the treatability of sewage treatment, which is the outlet from human society to the environment, and preventing contamination (such as nutrients, drug-resistant/pathogenic bacteria, and easily degradable organic matter) from being discharged is important for establishing a healthy water cycle and achieving sustainable harmony between people and the environment. In this class, we will give an overview of the role of sewage treatment in the water cycle that spans people and the environment, as well as the latest topics in sewage treatment and water environment research.

① You can explain the role of sewage systems in the water cycle. ② You can explain the water supply and sewage systems in your town. ③ You can explain the connection between your research and the water environment, and state what you would like to do to achieve a sustainable harmony between people and the environment.

The course will provide an overview of the water environment, water cycle, water metabolism, and the role and current state of sewerage systems within this context, and students will deepen their general knowledge by researching and presenting on the water supply and sewerage systems of their own local government. In addition, students will learn about cutting-edge research in fields ranging from earth science to environmental engineering, including water environment and sewerage engineering, and consider the connections to their own research.
