授業の目的と概要
This course focuses on drug discovery. Atsushi Manabe, President and CEO of Daiichi Sankyo, Kenji Yasukawa, President and CEO of Astellas Pharma, and Asuka Miyabayashi, a Japanese executive at Takeda Pharmaceutical, all graduated from faculties of agriculture. In the pharmaceutical industry, there are numerous employees with agricultural backgrounds earning over 100 million yen annually, making pharmaceutical companies strong candidates for your future career.

You will learn about the current state of drug discovery and modern pharmaceutical technologies, with the goal of contributing to the development of new drugs that can save future generations.

The instructor is a practicing physician involved in drug discovery, serving as an advisor to pharmaceutical companies. With hands-on experience in preclinical and clinical trials, the instructor will provide a highly practical and realistic learning experience.

【全体】
You will first gain a broad understanding of the overall industrial structure of the pharmaceutical industry, then break down and study each step of the drug discovery process in detail.

Please bring an internet-connected laptop or smartphone for research purposes, along with writing materials and a notebook.

第1回 Introduction to the Global Pharmaceutical Industry Students will be informed about the course objectives, grading criteria, and lecture format. Additionally, they will learn about the structure of the pharmaceutical industry from a global perspective. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第2回 The Pharmaceutical Industry in Japan Students will learn about the pharmaceutical industry in Japan. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第3回 Pipeline Students will learn about the overall process of drug discovery using multiple modalities, including small molecules, antibodies, nucleic acids, and peptides. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第4回 Seed Discovery Students will learn about the initial step of drug discovery. The course will also cover topics such as high-throughput screening (HTS), academia-driven drug discovery, and pharmaceutical ventures. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第5回 Lead Compounds Students will learn about synthetic development, drug efficacy, and pharmacological testing. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第6回 Preclinical Trials Students will learn about preclinical trials, including ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion), safety assessments, and other related evaluations. The course will also cover the IND (Investigational New Drug) application process. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第7回 Clinical Trials and Follow-Up Students will learn about clinical trials and follow-up processes. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.
第8回 Drug Discovery in the Near Future Students will learn about emerging modalities such as regenerative medicine, cell therapy, and digital pharmaceuticals, as well as new technologies like AI-driven drug discovery. Students are expected to review the distributed lecture materials and reference books, spending 2 hours on preparatory study and 2 hours on review.

成績評価法
Students will be required to create and submit a report during each class session, with access to online search tools.
Grading will be based entirely on these reports (100%).
You are allowed to use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. In fact, the course is designed with the assumption that everyone will use them, so not utilizing AI may put you at a significant disadvantage.
