授業の目的と概要
This course will provide doctoral-level engineering students with instruction on writing technical articles in English for academic and professional publication. In addition to covering the essential sections of technical articles, which includes introductions, backgrounds, method descriptions, results and discussion, conclusions, and references, students will also review the works of other students to further develop their critical and analytical capabilities. The course will cover each section of an academic article one at a time, with students completing each section while referring to an example article as they progress through the semester before submitting their final draft. Students are encouraged to use their current/prior research as the basis for their paper so that they can publish it upon completion, but this is not a requirement for the course.
授業の到達目標
Students enrolled in this course will work to achieve the following goals:
1) Write a full length academic article in English by becoming familiar with the essential parts of a technical article, as well as conventions related to citations, references, and formatting.
2) Learn the necessary phrases and vocabulary commonly used in scientific articles. In addition, students will become more fluent in the specific technical vocabulary related to their area of research.
3) Develop critical analytical techniques by providing feedback on the writings of other students.
4) Gain broader knowledge of a variety of engineering fields.
授業計画
【全体】
The course is divided into units which focus on specific sections of a scientific article. The first unit will cover the introduction and background sections, as well as introduce citations and referencing other research. The second unit will cover the method and results sections, while the third unit will focus on discussion and conclusions. The final weeks of class will review references and formatting.

When beginning each section, students will complete online homework using an example scientific article in order prepared specifically to highlight the necessary components of the section. At the end of each unit, students will submit a draft of the covered sections for peer review, which will comprise a significant portion of their overall course work.
