Innovation is necessary to build a sustainable, developing society in the 21st century. To realize innovation based on science and technology, the intellectual activities of researchers must be protected and utilized as rights. Intellectual property rights (patent rights, utility model rights, design rights, trademark rights, copyrights, etc.) play an important role in creating innovation. In this course, you will learn about these intellectual property rights. The class will be conducted in an e-learning format, and students will be evaluated based on the submission of eight reports (submitted as email attachments to Kimura). The e-learning site is at the address below. Distribution will begin on October 1, 2026. https://www.kim-lab.info/domescon/2026aftg_el/2026aftg_a.html

This course will provide an overview of intellectual property rights using case studies, and will also include practical exercises from a comprehensive perspective on intellectual property, such as identifying problems from an intellectual property perspective (noticing), detecting legal violations (finding), and how to respond (determine). The course will also provide a detailed explanation of the patent system, as well as an introduction to accessing, researching, and analyzing patent information. Students will then research and analyze patent information related to their own research topics. Researching patent information, not just academic papers, will be beneficial for students' own graduate research activities. The course will also consider the relationship between research ethics and intellectual property, with a particular focus on research ethics from the perspective of copyright law.
