授業の目的と概要

This seminar is positioned between the basic seminar in the first year of the doctoral programme and the preparation of the dissertation submission. It is aimed at second-year doctoral students in the Graduate School of East Asian Studies. Each doctoral student is required to give four presentations during the year. In each session, two doctoral students present the concept and progress of their dissertation to their supervisor and other faculty members. Both specialists and non-specialists question the presenters on the logical consistency, depth of content, originality and methodological appropriateness of their research, as well as its relevance to the discipline. Presenters are required to answer questions, including those previously raised by all participating faculty members. This means that the consistency, stability and progress of the research will be rigorously checked.

授業の到達目標

After four presentations, the content, structure and methods of the dissertation are clarified, leading to the preparation and preliminary examination of the dissertation. During the preliminary examination, students are rigorously tested to determine whether they are qualified to submit a dissertation. With the knowledge of research, speculation and methodology cultivated from a variety of perspectives in this seminar, the graduate student will face the challenge of the preliminary examination. Ultimately, with the award of a degree, students are expected to become independent as 'leading advanced professionals in East Asia', as required by the Graduate School.

授業計画

【全体】

The two presenters must upload their presentation material and reference materials to Moodle one week before the presentation. At this point the presenters must clearly separate the former and the latter. An English translation of the report should also be prepared for participants who do not understand Japanese. All participants should download and read the materials before attending the seminar. The presenter will give a 40-minute presentation in which he/she must clearly indicate the improvements made since the previous presentation and his/her response to the requests of the faculty members. It is planned to allow just under two hours per presenter.
