授業の目的と概要
This course focuses on the pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based industry. Therefore, this course requires basic knowledge of biotechnology. The course aims to explore the favorable relationships between innovations of technology and innovations of the business style in such an industry, while being based on the actual company cases. Concretely, you do the following: (1) learn about the R&D processes of progressive pharmaceutical companies and the effects of biotechnology in post-genome era on the companies, (2) understand the important features of business tied directly to science, (3) think about the difficulties that pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based companies should solve, and (4) discuss the appropriate business strategy and business model, while verifying the actual company cases.

Understand the characteristics of industries that rely on bioscience and be able to explain, at an overview level, the types of challenges they face.
Be able to consider and discuss how bioscience firms can increase the likelihood of successful innovation.

第1回 The Drug Discovery Business to Date You learn about a background to the history and business aspects of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based industry.
In principle, face-to-face classes are to be conducted.
However, if the class method is changed due to the COVID-19 spread, etc., the change will be notified via the eYUSDL.

第2回 The Drug Discovery Business to Come You learn about the outline of the possible future of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based industry. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第3回 How Things Get Done: The Project Team You learn about practical aspects of how projects are conducted in industry. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第4回 Hit Generation You learn about the progression from hit-finding strategies through to compound optimization for in vivo experiments. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第5回 Turning Hits into Drugs, ADMET and PK Properties You learn about the needed features for drugs, including "absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity." Perform the report assignment.

第6回 Drug R&D and the Organizational Challenges You learn about the characteristics of drug R&D that influence the fundamental economics of this business. Read a case.

第7回 The Anatomy of a Science-Based Business You learn the followings: What types of firm compete in this segment? How have these changed over time? What kind of strategies have they pursued? and, What capabilities do they have? Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第8回 Case Study Case study by using Amgen or Genentech Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第9回 The Performance of the Biotech Industry We focus on the financial and operating performance of the biotechnology industry. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第10回 The Monetization of Intellectual Property We argues that three interrelated forces drive the business of biotechnology. They are the transfer of technology from universities to the private sector, capital market, and the market for know-how, respectively. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第11回 Organizational Strategies and Business Models We focus on the strategies and business models that biotech and established pharmaceutical companies might deploy to improve their performance. Preparation and review (approx. 4 hours)
第12回 Practical Work It is assigned to read an academic research paper. Perform the report assignment and submit it.
